Buying your first climbing shoes can feel overwhelming. Many beginners assume aggressive shoes are always better — but that’s not true.
The best climbing shoes depends on your foot shape, climbing style, and comfort.
Helps you place your feet accurately on small footholds.
Transfers force from your foot to the wall efficiently.
Encourages proper footwork and balance.
Short powerful moves. Soft shoes often feel best.
Longer routes. Comfort and support matter more.
Versatile shoes are ideal for beginners.
When I first started climbing, I thought the most aggressive shoes were the best.
As I gained experience, I realized this wasn’t true.
I personally prefer moderately curved, softer shoes because they feel more natural and allow me to climb a variety of terrain.
My climbing friend, however, prefers aggressive shoes because he focuses on steep overhangs.
There is no universally best climbing shoe.
The right shoe depends on your style, terrain, and comfort.
For beginners, I usually recommend focusing on comfort and versatility first. As you climb more, you'll naturally discover the types of routes you enjoy most, and your shoe preferences will develop along with your climbing.
